On 1 May 1922, during Germany's period of hyperinflation, 38-year-old Hugo Bruckmann founded the company in Cologne.

His ambition was to establish a foothold in the market by supplying saddle covers and mud flaps, competing with one of Central Germany's leading manufacturers.

Together with a small team of seamstresses, he began producing saddle covers for a handful of wholesale customers and named the company Velo-Sportartikelfabrik & Co.

Just a few years after its foundation, the company had already outgrown its original production facility. As demand continued to grow, the limited space became a constraint, leading to an expansion of the business and its relocation to Bad Honnef on the River Rhine.

Five years later, the company expanded once again. A four-storey factory building was leased in Düsseldorf, serving as the company's manufacturing base for the next 20 years. In addition to saddle covers and mud flaps, production was expanded to include panniers, waterproof trousers and jackets, handlebar mitts, knee blankets, protective covers, coat protectors, ear warmers, tool bags, and many other products.

In 1943, the company suffered a major setback when incendiary bombs destroyed the upper three floors of the factory. Only the heavy machinery in the basement survived. After the end of the war, reconstruction began with the support of many dedicated helpers and a growing network of home-based workers.

Thirty years after its foundation, the company employed 120 people. Production was spread across four floors and an adjoining building, making it increasingly difficult to support efficient manufacturing.

To accommodate continued growth, the company relocated to a former gingerbread factory on St. Huberter Straße in Kempen. This marked the beginning of another period of expansion, with the product range growing to include rain covers, rain hats, pot covers, weatherproof coats, camping bags, folding bags, and car covers.

As market demands evolved, selected product lines began to be imported from Hong Kong and Taiwan, requiring additional warehouse capacity. At the same time, new fire safety regulations could no longer be met in the old building with its timber-beam construction. These developments ultimately led to the decision to build a new production facility.

Following the purchase of a site in the newly developed industrial estate, construction of the company's new facility began in 1969. On Am Selder, a purpose-built production hall covering 1,000 square metres with a height of 6.5 metres was erected, providing significantly improved conditions for manufacturing and future growth.
